Air Forensics: Combining human and non-human environmental DNA

Saira Adnan is originally from Pakistan, where she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Zoology. During her undergraduate studies, she developed a strong interest in animal biology and parasite diversity. She later pursued a Master’s degree in Plant Biotechnology for Food and Global Health at the University of Tuscia, Italy, where her research focus shifted toward molecular biology and genomics, particularly the genomic characterization of plant pathogen. During her Master’s she studied her third semester as an Erasmus+ exchange student at the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Hungary. She has also participated in several international training schools, gaining interdisciplinary laboratory and analytical experience.

She is currently a Marie Skłodowska-Curie PhD researcher within the Natural Traces project. Her doctoral research topic is focused on air forensics, combining human and non-human environmental DNA. Her work aims to develop and validate a forensic air sampling device, sequence airborne human and non-human eDNA, and apply machine learning approaches to interpret complex biological signals from air samples. Her research seeks to assess the reliability of air as a forensic matrix and expand the application of environmental DNA as natural trace evidence.
